Anne Kramer is something of a legend in Napa’s viticultural circles. Shake Ridge is her family vineyard site out in the Sierra Foothills, a meticulously farmed property whose fruit is coveted by some of the region’s top names. Picks are carried out by the family in this “perfectly farmed” site, often at night, to preserve freshness. Almost entirely Syrah, with 3-4% viognier co-fermented in the blend, this emerges from a warm growing season yet offers up a more finessed, more mineral and more savoury offering than the Winds of Change bottling. Wild red berries, orange zest and floral notes mingle with notes of dried rose and tobacco in this complex, intense and haunting Californian Syrah. Give it an hour in the decanter and let it unfurl.

Notes

The 2020 Syrah Shake Ridge is a wild, unruly wine. Here, too, the scorching hot, dry year ratcheted up the flavor intensity, adding both darkness and richness. I don’t see much of the true character of Shake Ridge, but the 2020 is a good wine, if taken on its own terms. Slightly astringent tannins are a reminder of the challenging growing season.
