Tasting Notes
The trio of Domaine de Chevalier, Haut Bailly and Smith Haut Lafitte have become the unofficial super seconds of Pessac Leognan. The quality at these estates now rival the established order and are some of the most thrilling wines to be found on either bank of the Gironde. 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot and 8% Petit Verdot. Olivier Bernard, always one of the most jovial and charming men in Bordeaux has just cause to be beaming. After the sensational 2009, the 2010 is right up there again. Olivier’s decision to replant the vineyards has paid dividends, the 2005, 2008, 2009 and now 2010 are amongst the best wines ever produced at this estate. To pick a favourite is impossible; you just have to have all four! As in 2009, we expect Domaine de Chevalier (along with Grand Puy Lacoste) to be one of the best value buys. This tremendous example offers aromas of brooding purple fruits, bright cherries and intense mineral notes. On the palate this is wonderfully vivid, clear, bright, with ample cassis and creamy bramble fruit. It is lush, packed with crunchy fruit, linear and possesses a solid backbone that will ensure this ages gracefully. A beautifully balanced, lifted, accomplished Domaine de Chevalier with exquisite smooth stone tannins.
