Jacques and Sylvie’s home estate is situated in the commune of Mouillac in the canton of Fronsac. Over a third of Grand Village is planted with vines in the best and most suitable plots for viticulture. The rest of the estate is woodland or is used to rear cattle or produce cereal crops. It is an enchanting estate and one that despite its lowly appellation is capable of producing excellent wines. The 2013 red is produced from 77% Merlot and 23% Cabernet Franc. It is as charming as ever, packed with sweet hedgerow fruit, wild berries and a hint of kirsch. There’s a lovely honest character to this wine – it’s all about generous fruit and perfect balance. It will be a lovely wine for the dinner table in a few years’ time.

Notes

The 2013 Acte 5, the first vintage to include selection massale Cabernet Franc from Château Lafleur, has a very conservative and quite earthy bouquet, nicely defined if just missing a little vigour due to the challenging growing season. It seems a little static at the moment, a bit lethargic in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin and a fine bead of acidity, actually better than the nose suggests. Harmonious and lithe, it gradually deepens with blackberry pastille and a hint of salted liquorice on the finish that I notice becomes leafier with time. It ends up better than anticipated, a 2013 handicapped by the aromatics. Tasted at the Acte vertical in London.
