The first vintage standing on its own two feet. New laws passed in 2010 stopped the mention of anything other than a vineyard or brand name on a Barolo label. This meant Fossati / Case Nere had to stop. Case Nere will become the 10 years-on Riserva, whilst the fruit of the relatively young Fossati vines, since 2010, had been used as part of the regular Nebbiolo. The vines are older now but Voerzio only wants to make the best of the best, so has only made 4800 bottles of this from 20,000 plants in its debut vintage! A fuller, burlier structure that points to Barolo a little more than it does La Morra. Bursts of hedgerow fruit, blueberry and sea salt. Muscly but with good juiciness. Fullsome but tangy and lively.

Notes

Voerzio’s 2015 Barolo Fossati is gorgeous. As always, the Fossati has a slightly nervous quality to its tannins. In this vintage, that’s a plus, as it gives the wine tension, energy and focus, all of which work so well in balancing the natural radiance of the fruit. This mid-weight Barolo packs plenty of punch and depth/
